"The Vanishing Beauty" won the National Award for Outstanding Science Popularization Work |
In the 2022 National Excellent Science Popularization Work Recommendation Activity organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology, 484 works (sets) were recommended by various departments around the country, and 100 national excellent science popularization works (sets) were selected by the formal review and expert evaluation in 2022. Among them, Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography of the Chinese Academy of Sciences submitted Vanishing Beauty - Tracing Endangered Flora and Fauna in China (2 volumes) edited by researcher Guan Kaiyun, researcher Guo Zhongren and associate researcher Zhu Jianguo, which won the award. This is also the only award-winning work among the recommended works in Xinjiang. Vanishing Beauty unites the investigation results of nearly 100 scientists from CAS, and nearly one million words and nearly 1,000 beautiful realistic photos and hand drawings. It provides a scientific and systematic introduction to the importance, identification characteristics, reproductive characteristics, endangerment level, conservation status, discovery history, cultural history and conservation value of 130 rare and endangered plants and 205 rare and endangered animals in China, and makes conservation recommendations for each species. Its vivid language, beautiful photos and hand drawings allow readers to understand the interactions between rare and endangered plants and animals in China and their living environment, to understand their survival status, so that more public can participate in the protection of endangered plants and animals.
