Brief Introduction

  

  

1. Basic Information

Xinjiang Branch. Chinese Academy of Science was established in July 30th 1957 and orientated to provide services to the development of economy, society as well as science and technology in Xinjiang autonomous region. Institute of Soil Biology and Resource, Physics Institute, Chemical Institute, Geological and Geographical Institute and Institute of Ethnic History then have been founded in succession. During the period of Cultural Revolution, Xinjiang branch was delegated to local government. November 24th 1977, Chinese Academy of Science applied for the resumption of Xinjiang branch to State Council and then got approval successfully.

Xinjiang branch now has 3 research institutions: Xinjiang Institute of Ecology and Geography. CAS, Xinjiang Technical Institute of Physics &Chemistry. CAS and Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory. CAS as well as 2 subordinate unit: a kindergarten and a logistics service center. By 2013, Xinjiang branch has 12 field stations, 3 of them are national level; 6 engineering centers,in which 2 are national level and 2 are Autonomous Region’s level; 3 national scientific education bases: a specimen museum and a desert botanical garden belonging to Xinjiang Institute of Ecology & Geography and an observation station in Nanshan belonging to Xinjiang Astronomical Observatory. Xinjiang branch also has 9 key laboratories on the level of Chinese Academy of Science or Xinjiang Autonomous Region.

Up to September 2013, the staff number of Xinjiang branch has reached 1028 composed of 14 ethnic groups, in which, 799 are professional and technical personnel.116 of them are innovative professor of engineering and 199 of them are vice-professor of engineering.

Xinjiang branch has 22 master's degree conferring site and 14 doctor's degree conferring site. Students on reading are 613 and more than 2000 students have gotten their master’s degree or doctor's degree.

In the past three years, Xinjiang branch has won 88 awards on provincial and ministerial level. More than 1300 scientific and technological achievements have been approved, 450 of them won the award on various levels and 2 of them won the award conferred by UNEP for the outstanding contribution for the desertification control. More than 200 monographs and 6000 theses have been published. Xinjiang branch has already established relation with more than 30 countries on Scientific and technological communication and undertaken more than 40 projects of international cooperation, more than 20 international academic conference have been held.

2. Research Area & Major Field

Base on deep processing of Xinjiang peculiar resource and new material technology, Xinjiang branch carry out the technological research on material science and technology; chemical and chemical engineering system project; biochemistry; radiation physics, petroleum gas recovery and deep processing; computer application; sensor technology; chemical & biological engineering.

Center on oasis ecological process and evolution mechanism; oasis ecological construction and environmental improvement; resource exploitation and regional development these three large domain, Xinjiang branch carry out the research on following nine aspect: oasis ecological system and process, coupling mechanism on oasis-desert transition belt, evolution and degeneration mechanism of oasis environment, oasis ecological agriculture experiment; recovery and rebuilt of the damaged ecological system; desertification prevention technology system; rational exploitation and protection of advantageous resource; industry restructuring and urban-rural development as well as regional sustainable development information system.

Base on the observation and research of radio astronomy, Xinjiang branch focus on research of radio astrophysics; technology of VLBI and radio astronomy; pulsar; active galactic nucleus; formation and evolvement of star; meanwhile, carry out the research on satellite dynamic observation and location finding.

3. Contribution to Local Economy

After long-term scientific research on water and soil resource, environment and ecology, Xinjiang branch has grasped large quantity of scientific fundamental material, so that provide scientific reference for our country and autonomous region to draw up far-reaching economic development plan.

In the aspect of desert environmental evolvement and desertification control, Xinjiang branch has gotten important breakthrough, for the prevention of sandstorm, revegetation, recovery and rebuild of ecological system, Xinjiang branch also has gotten phasic results.

In the primary-stage survey of important projects, such as Tarim harnessment, petroleum exploitation, water transfer, ecological construction, railway and desert-road construction, Xinjiang branch all provide scientific reference and take part in engineering design and environmental recovery directly using high-tech method.

By using the important achievement on salinization prevention and high-quality, high-yield, Eco-friendly agriculture basing on liquid manure control, Xinjiang branch give peasants and herdsmen vigorous support and help them cast off poverty.

In the aspect of tertiary recovery and deep processing of light material in natural gas, Xinjiang branch has already entered the stage of industrialized experiment and began the operation of knowledge capital.

In the field of chemistry of natural product, health products and makeup, after long-term of experiment and small lot production, Xinjiang branch plan to enter the market.

Successfully introduce the gene of leymus racemosus to wheat and produce a new kind of wheat with large ear.

The research on physics in Xinjiang branch include radiation physics of electronic material, nuclear hardening for circuit, application of the reinforcement device in satellite, NTC, nanophase materials and so on.

VLBI became an important member of the intercontinental conjunction, the discovery in the pulsar has gotten publicly acceptance in the academic circle.

Two national science education centers play important role in scientific and materialistic publicity and improve the quality of all ethnic groups. 

4. Branch-Local Cooperation

At the beginning of the "ninth five-year program", Xinjiang branch and subordinate research institutes have been active to organize lots of relevant specialists and put forward 17 project suggestions for the development of Xinjiang autonomous region. Most of them have gotten Government's approval and already taken effect.

Xinjiang branch of CAS has already signed branch-local cooperation agreement with Kazak autonomous prefecture of Ili, Altay prefecture, Aksu prefecture and Mongolia autonomous prefecture of Bayingolin.

According to the strategy of giving priority to the development of northern slope of Tianshan mountain ecological belt, Xinjiang branch enhance scientific and technological cooperation with three national development zone in that ecological belt, they are Shihezi economic technical development area, Urumqi economic technical development area and Urumqi new and high-tech development zone.

In order to establish all-dimensional, multistoried scientific and technological cooperation with Xinjiang autonomous region, Xinjiang branch conducted "CAS-Xinjiang autonomous region scientific and technological cooperation meeting" in 2002, 2003 and 2005 successfully, and made it an important cooperating meeting at the provincial and ministerial level. "CAS-Xinjiang scientific and technological cooperation meeting" has already became an significant platform for Xinjiang autonomous region cooperating with CAS and inland provinces, promoting economic, social, scientific and technological development, getting technological, talented personnel and fund support from CAS and inland provinces directly, meanwhile, it contribute to the popularity of scientific and technological knowledge for the people of all ethnic group in Xinjiang.

After more than ten years' development, the branch-local cooperation now isn't limited to project cooperation, Xinjiang branch together with local government and enterprises now make joint effort to build discipline, experimental base as well as scientific and economic entity. Xinjiang branch has already entered the local government's personnel training system, consulting system, planning system, managing system and decision-making system, making immeasurable contribution to the scientific and economic development of Xinjiang autonomous region.
